Set off on a spiritually and scenically rich journey to the source of the Ganga, one of India’s most sacred rivers. Beginning in Rishikesh, this trek leads through pilgrimage towns, glacier-fed valleys, and towering Himalayan peaks—some reaching nearly 6,000 m. At Gaumukh, the snout of the Gangotri Glacier, witness the icy origin of the Ganga, revered by sages and pilgrims for millennia. Along the trail, encounter ascetic sadhus, remote mountain villages, and some of the finest alpine views in the Garhwal Himalayas. The trek concludes in Uttarkashi before returning to Delhi by train from Haridwar.

Day 1Arrival in Delhi

Guests will be received at the airport followed by a transfer to a hotel, where you will check in and rest for the night.

Day 2Drive from Delhi to Rishikesh

We will be driving in order to reach Rishikesh. After having lunch you can take a stroll in the city. In the evening we can walk to the Trivani Ghat. It is a very sacred Ghat where people bathe in the evening and where ceremonies are held called “Ganga Arti”, with religious songs when the pilgrims light a lamp of butter with fresh flowers to make an offering. We will then return to the hotel to have dinner.

Day 3 Rishikesh to Ghuttu

It will be an early departure by road to Ghuttu, a quiet Himalayan village nestled in the hills. Overnight stay will be arranged in a lodge or comfortable camp setup in Ghuttu.

Day 4Trek from Ghuttu to Bhairon Chatti

The trek begins with a scenic walk through terraced farmlands, traditional villages, and small hill temples. As we gain elevation, the path winds through a beautiful pine forest before reaching the peaceful meadow of Bhairon Chatti. Overnight stay in tents under the forest canopy.

Day 5Trek from Bhairon Chatti to Budha Kedar

Today we descend steadily through mixed forests and farmlands, eventually crossing the Ball Ganga River. We’ll set up camp beside the serene village of Budha Kedar and visit its revered Shiva temple—an ancient spiritual site steeped in quiet charm.

Day 6Trek from Budha Kedar to Belak

We ascend gradually through forested terrain to reach the final pass of the trek. The trail then winds down across farmlands and scattered villages. We’ll camp near the peaceful village of Belak, surrounded by lush greenery and local life.

Day 7 Trek from Belak to Malla, Drive to Gangotri

We descend through several traditional villages down to the Bhagirathi River, then ascend to reach the hill village of Malla. From here, we drive through stunning river gorges to Gangotri—home to the sacred Ganga temple. Overnight stay in a local lodge.

Day 8Trek from Gangotri to Bhujbasa

We follow the Bhagirathi River upstream, trekking through the majestic Chirbasa (pine forest) and on to Bhujbasa, named after the birch trees dotting the valley. The trail offers magnificent views of Himalayan giants rising above 6,000 m. Overnight stay in a tourist bungalow or camp.

Day 9Trek from Bhujbasa to Gaumukh and Tapovan

We begin with a 4 km trek to Gaumukh, the revered source of the Ganga, where pilgrims collect holy water and take ritual dips. From here, a challenging ascent over the Gaumukh Glacier leads us to Tapovan, a high-altitude meadow surrounded by towering peaks. Overnight stay in camp.

Day 10Exploration Day in Tapovan

A full day to explore the pristine surroundings of Tapovan, nestled beneath the towering Shivling Peak. Optional hikes include a trek toward Meru Glacier and a visit to the glacial lake, reaching elevations near 5,000 m. Enjoy the silence of the high Himalayas—and if lucky, spot elusive mountain goats in this surreal landscape. Overnight stay in camp.

Day 11Trek from Tapovan to Chirbasa

We retrace our steps along the Bhagirathi valley, descending steadily through glacial terrain and alpine forests to reach Chirbasa, the pine-covered rest point from earlier in the journey. Overnight stay in camp nestled among the trees.

Day 12Trek from Chirbasa to Gangotri, Drive to Uttarkashi

Day 13Drive from Uttarkashi to Rishikesh

We begin with a short drive to Haridwar, one of the holiest cities on the Ganges. Spend the day visiting ancient temples and sacred ghats. In the evening, witness the moving Ganga Aarti ceremony, as pilgrims float flower-lit oil lamps on the river. Visit the Daksha Mahadev Temple before retiring for the night in a local hotel.

Day 15Train from Haridwar to Delhi & Departure

Do I need trekking experience to join this trip?

This trek is moderate to challenging and best for those with some prior high-altitude experience.

Can I visit Gaumukh without trekking to Tapovan?

Yes, Gaumukh can be visited as a standalone trek, but Tapovan offers the best Himalayan views.

Are permits required for Gaumukh or Tapovan?

Yes, a forest entry permit is mandatory and will be arranged by the organizers.

Can I bring a suitcase for the trek?

No. Please carry a backpack (40–60L). Suitcases are not suitable for mountain trails.

What’s the weight limit for my backpack?

Keep your personal backpack under 8–10 kg. If porter/mule services are available, you can send up to 12–15 kg (charges may apply).

Are there toilets on the trek?

Yes, but they’re basic. Expect dry pit toilets at campsites. Carry toilet paper and hand sanitizer.

Will I get mobile network?

Limited network in Gangotri; no coverage beyond Bhujbasa.

Is the drinking water safe?

Yes, filtered or boiled water is provided at camps. Carry two reusable bottles (1L each). Avoid buying plastic bottles.

What kind of wildlife might I see?

You might see Himalayan goats, snow pigeons, and even blue sheep if you’re lucky.
