The Monk’s Trail Markha Valley Trek India is a classic Himalayan journey through one of Ladakh’s most iconic valleys, blending high passes, ancient villages, and dramatic mountain landscapes. Starting from Stok and ending in Shang, this scenic route crosses narrow gorges, open plateaus, and remote settlements where nomadic Khampa herders still live with their grazing herds.

Day 6Over Ganda La – Yurutse to Skiu

Day 7Valley Walk – Skiu to Markha

Day 8Into the Highlands – Markha to Tchatchutse via Hankar

Begin a steady ascent through Markha Valley’s rugged terrain, navigating occasional rocky sections near the riverbed. From Hankar’s highest ridge, follow a quiet stream and cross a small bridge to the wide pastures of Tchatchutse for your overnight camp.

Day 9Towards the Peaks – Tchatchutse to Nimaling

Day 10Final Pass – Nimaling to Shang via Kongmaru La

Day 11Return to Leh – Monastery Circuit Drive

Can I bring a suitcase for the trek?

No. Please carry a backpack (40–60L). Suitcases are not suitable for mountain trails.

What’s the weight limit for my backpack?

Keep your personal backpack under 8–10 kg. If porter/mule services are available, you can send up to 12–15 kg (charges may apply).

Are there toilets on the trek?

Yes, but they’re basic. Expect dry pit toilets at campsites. Carry toilet paper and hand sanitizer.

Will I get mobile network or electricity?

Mobile signal is limited—only BSNL or Airtel may work in a few spots. Electricity is rare, so bring a power bank (solar recommended).

What if I get too tired to continue?

Take breaks. In some cases, a mule/horse can be arranged at extra cost. Emergency evacuation is only for serious medical needs.

Is the drinking water safe?

Yes, filtered or boiled water is provided at camps. Carry two reusable bottles (1L each). Avoid buying plastic bottles.
